Traditional Crafted Hand Fans of the Indian Subcontinent from the collection of Jatin Das
In the first exhibition of its kind to be held in the Fan Museum, Pankha (common word for hand fans in urban India) celebrates what is mostly the traditional craft of women at home in the villages and towns of India. Fixed fans, made of bamboo, palm leaf, wood, brass, cloth, plastic, velvet and lace are carefully embroidered with beads, frills, sequins and mirror pieces – to then be used for fanning relatives in the house, to fan fires on roadside snack stalls or to fan images of the god in the temple. Shapes are often traditional to particular regions. The fans featuring in this exhibition come from the collection of the eminent contemporary artist, Jatin Das, which is housed at the J D Centre of Art, Bhubaneshwar, Orissa.
